Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves believes the club need to make three crucial signings this summer in order to win the Premier League next season.

The Red Devils briefly flirted with making the title race a three-horse race this season but injuries and suspensions curtailed their slim hopes, which only underlined the lack of depth at Old Trafford.

United terminated Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract in January and though Wout Weghorst has impressed since joining on loan, United have over-relied on Marcus Rashford’s goals.

With Anthony Martial spending most of the campaign on the injury table, signing a striker is an obvious area for United to invest in this summer.

But Hargreaves believes central midfield and defence are the two other areas in which United can make significant improvements.

‘It is hard to go from third or fourth to win the title,’ said Hargreaves.

‘You have to steadily climb, we have seen in the past. I think goal scoring has been one of their biggest issues, they are 20 odd goals behind the top teams.

‘But I do think they need depth, at the top of the pitch, in midfield and maybe in defence. To get three important players in would make a huge difference to help bridge the gap.’

United are weighing up moves for Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen, while Jude Bellingham is an ideal target in central midfield.

The club could be sold to new owners by the time the transfer window opens and they’ll be looking to make a statement start in the transfer market.

However, United have to be wary of Financial Fair Play rules after spending £220m last summer.
