Patrick Vieira’s future as Crystal Palace manager is in ‘serious doubt’ following last night’s defeat against rivals Brighton.

Solly March’s first-half goal condemned the Eagles to their latest loss and although they remain in 12th place in a congested Premier League table they sit just three points above the relegation zone with 11 games of their season remaining.

Vieira replaced Roy Hodgson 18 months ago and made a bright start to his Selhurst Park tenure, but he has failed to build on his early success and his side’s progress has been hindered by a chronic lack of goals.

Palace remain winless in 2023 and went three games without registering a shot on target before they at least managed to test Brighton’s Jason Steele during last night’s setback.

According to the Guardian, chairman Steve Parrish is now giving serious consideration to a change of management ahead of a daunting visit to league leaders and Vieira’s former club Arsenal on Sunday.

All told Palace are now winless in 11 league matche and were forced to hand teenage goalkeeper Joe Whitworth a professional debut with regular number one Vicente Guaita and deputy Sam Johnstone both injured.

At 19 years and 15 days, he was the youngest goalkeeper to appear in a Premier League game since Ben Alnwick played for Sunderland in December 2005.
Whitworth got his first decent touch of the ball when he held Kaoru Mitoma’s long-range effort.

But he was beaten moments later when Mitoma sent March clean through to find the net with a composed finish.

Vieira said: ‘Joe has the self-belief and the calmness. He showed a lot of good things. It’s even more special because he came through the academy.’

‘Of course when you create chances but don’t take them you worry about that,’ added Vieira.

‘Our front players have to change their mindset. We have to be more aggressive going forward.’
